Portrait of Andrew Alling

Andrew Alling is a junior in the College of Engineering at UH Manoa, majoring in Electrical Engineering with a focus on Electro-physics. Before attending UH Manoa, he served as a submarine nuclear power plant operator in the Navy, where he gained experience in reactor operations and mechanical systems. His academic interests center on developing and refining detection and renewable energy technologies, particularly for challenging environments where traditional systems face limitations. Currently, his research focuses on UXO (Unexploded Ordnance) detection and environmental restoration in tropical volcanic regions, which involve complex geophysical and electromagnetic challenges.

Post-graduation, Andrew aspires to work in fields that integrate technology with environmental and societal impact. His goal is to contribute to advanced detection systems and sustainable energy solutions, potentially working with public-sector projects or research institutions focused on environmental conservation. Eventually, he hopes to lead projects that support the rehabilitation of former defense sites and their conversion into productive community assets.

Outside of his academic and professional pursuits, Andrew enjoys a variety of hobbies and non-academic interests that keep him connected to both his creative and active sides. He enjoys playing instruments like guitar, bass, and piano with friends, finding music a great way to unwind and express himself. He also practices jiu-jitsu, which builds discipline and resilience. Passionate about the outdoors, Andrew spends much of his free time hiking, diving, and surfing, embracing both ocean and mountain activities. Additionally, he has a strong interest in gardening and farming, where he appreciates the process of nurturing and growing plants—a pursuit that ties back to his commitment to environmental sustainability and restoration.
